SharePoint Vendors Who Delete All Your Stuff???

It’s been a while since I blogged, been SO very busy at work – but after this call, I am dropping everything to write this.

A new client just contacted me to tell me that they are in trouble with their SharePoint site. They proceeded to explain that their SharePoint vendor of 3 months, sent a mail this morning to cancel their services because they were refused Global Admin Rights by the client’s overseas holding company.

The vendor then promptly used PowerShell to delete the entire intranet they had built in the past 3 months – work they had been paid tens of thousands of Rands to do!

The client has nothing left but a generic communications site, and have been on Google all morning to try find someone who can help them get it back.

I don’t even know where to start on this …..

What kind of ethics must you have to think this is okay????? This is NOT okay when you have already been paid! The stuff you built for your client – belongs to your client, not to you! No wonder clients have a heart attack when you ask for Global Admin Rights, because this is EXACTLY what they are afraid of! I don’t care what the relationship was like, you were paid to do a job and have no legal precedent to delete that work.

So what, next time a builder comes to your house to do something, if you disagree on how the house must be accessed and he cancels the job, he can demolish everything he built?? No! And neither can you when building an intranet!

Seriously SharePoint industry, when are we going to get past this kind of dodgy behaviour? It’s been going on for decades, enough already!

You know who you are!

  1. If the data was so important why didn’t the customer have a backup solution in place? Microsoft does not have or provide one by default so why would you risk it. Like car insurance – everyone needs it, most have it, you hope you’ll never need to use it, but when you do it’s a godsend….
