Don’t Give Up

Is learning and using SharePoint getting you down? Does it feel like an insurmountable task to learn it?  Are you wondering what you’re even bothering for? Maybe thinking you’re too old, too young, too stupid, too thin, too fat, too tired?

It’s ok to feel like that sometimes, but you are none of those things.

SharePoint is a monster, there’s no getting away from that.  But whatever it is you are doing to learn it – you’re doing ok.  Don’t be so hard on yourself.  You are exactly where you are meant to be.

Just remember, there is no law that says you have to use every single feature in SharePoint.  If something is too difficult for you, just don’t use it.  If you don’t see the business value in a specific feature, don’t use it.  There may be better and worser practices for stuff (and better English than that! ;-)); but no actual law forcing you to do anything.  You get taught all the features to give you a choice of tools to use as you please to make your working life easier.

Do what works for you.  Learn what interests you.  Take it one day at a time.

Don’t try and keep up with technology, you are going to lose.  Leave that to the hard core techies.  You are not an early adopter, you are a late adopter; you use the same tools for a very long time. You’re comfortable with them, they’re second nature, you know them but you only use the parts you like, often. Like Excel right? Bet you’ve been using that baby for years.  One day SharePoint will be like that, promise. Just keep it simple till then.

So you know you always read things for a reason right?  If you’re battling with something right now that has nothing to do with SharePoint, hope this post will give you the strength to get through just one more day.  Maybe everything you’ve been waiting for happens tomorrow!!

Why not treat yourself to a personal day to gather your thoughts and have a breather.  It will all still be here when you get back.
