How would you feel if you went to SharePoint training and the teacher sarcastically said “Do I need to send you on Typing 101 first?”. How would you feel if the teacher made you feel stupid all day; made you scared to death to ask a question; left you alone all day and complained about their lot in life instead and how much they hate their job. (True story this). WTF!
Professional business people get sent to SharePoint training to get them to adopt the platform and they are being treated like this more often than not in the industry.
Do you realise what the knock-on effect is?
They hate IT for suggesting it. They refuse to touch SharePoint for fear of breaking it. They believe SharePoint is complicated and difficult to use. They get an even more negative perception about all technology. Huge amounts of money is wasted on ineffective training resulting in re-training and double costs. IT is frustrated and mystified as to why business won’t adopt the platform when they’ve been trained. Business is irritated at the waste of their precious time. They question their abilities because they’re made to feel stupid. … And then who gets blamed? SharePoint.
It’s not SharePoint! It’s the bad teacher. Don’t ever stand for being treated the way that was described above – walk out and demand a refund!
If you are a SharePoint trainer and you are sick of it – get out of the industry! Stop tainting the lives of business professionals who are just trying to get a job done and are excited about learning. You are doing untold damage and it is not ethical.
Thank you.
Ricky, I agree with you 100%! Mine wouldn’t see the end of the day either.

Oh, man! I got sick to my stomach just reading about that! Wow!
“…complained about their lot in life instead and how much they hate their job.”
If one of our instructors did that, they wouldn’t have to hate it any longer–not that one anyway.
Thanks for sharing this!

Yes it sure will. Just always remember your audience, and tailor your training style accordingly.

Veronique, I’m encouraged to realize that my decade of computer training experience will come in handy for SharePoint. One day, somewhere, I’ll be teaching SharePoint.

@SharePointengineer – thank you. It makes me so mad when I hear my new clients tell me these horror stories of their industry experience. It’s just not on and it’s time the industry got cleaned up.

Michelle, what an unbelievably lovely thing to say! Thank you! You are still one of my biggest success stories relative to how little time we spent together. I am so glad that you embraced your new skills and you have completely shone in your new world. You and your stunning colleagues are walking, talking examples of how easy it is to reinvent yourselves when you are open to it. I will certainly keep doing what I am doing, because having students like you makes everything worthwhile. From your non techi teacher. 🙂

Veronique, I was so fortunate that you were the excellent teacher that first taught me about SharePoint. My working day would be so different if not. Keep doing what you are doing, and reminding others what they should be doing. You are an AMAZING teacher. From your non techi student:)
