List Web Parts Deleted From Site Page When Editing Views in SharePoint 2010

Another not so amusing quirck from SharePoint 2010.  If you insert a list web part into a site page in SharePoint 2010, and then try and edit the columns in the view – the web part will delete from the page.

In this example, I wanted to add my Announcements web part to the landing page to display all previous announcements per category.  The web part inserts perfectly, but there are too many columns for the landing page.

I then tried to edit the view.

And remove the miscellaneous columns.

But when I click Apply and OK, the whole web part is deleted.  Thanks SharePoint.  You can change all the web part settings except the columns in a view.

The work-around : Create a view exactly how you need it to display on the page.

And the web part will then display as originally required.

This is not a problem in SharePoint 2007, you can edit the columns as you please.

  1. I had the same problem. The work around I came up with was to add the list web part, save my changes to the edited page and then use the web part properties to change the view.

  4. Great idea, Veronica. This bug has been very annoying to me also. It also happens with other types such as filter or chart web parts. I blame “wiki page home page”, and disable this site feature whenever possible.
